What is Filter Bubble?

A filter bubble is the intellectual isolation that can occur when algorithms show people content they already agree with or engage with — gradually limiting exposure to diverse viewpoints. Social media algorithms optimize for engagement, and content that confirms existing beliefs tends to generate more engagement than challenging content.

Why It Matters for Families

Filter bubbles limit intellectual development and can make young people increasingly susceptible to misinformation that aligns with their existing views. They also contribute to polarization — people become less aware that reasonable people can hold very different perspectives.
